My understanding is we have many guides. Each assigned to help and learn from us. Some guides are assigned to us for specific lessons. We also have a door keeper, also a guide. Who over looks and introduces other guides, as and when they are needed.
Our Door Keeper or main guide never leaves us, but at times are forced to stand back. Some times we do this on an unconscious level by denying them , refusing to listen or refusing to learn a lesson and our time up for that lesson is decided by us. we are all capable of meeting our guides, but only if you have an open mind. We close ourselves off to the spirit world, they are never far from us.
We do have family guides but it is important to remember that they will some times advise us, but their emotions for us can sometimes cloud their guidance in a bias way.
If one wish's to get to know their guides, then ask them to make themselves known to you. if you have an open mind it is as easy as that.
I would recommend a novice starts by asking for his/her main guide or door keeper. And ask for proof until you are satisfied. But the philosophy or the spirit world says, Once we give you the truth and give you your evidence, then the next question will be eagerly awaited.
