Psychometry is done in 2 ways.

The first is about the physical contact - tactile senses. When you open all your psychic sensitivities to the senses, you will 'feel' something from the actual article.

The other way is to take the psychic sensitivities to a spirit level. From your spirit you can access all your senses (as well as intuition and I know - this comes from the heart - it neither sees nor hears - it just knows) and receive information on the article in question.

Then in either method you will learn not just about the article and its history but also about the energies of the owner(s) that have been left upon it.
