Background:
My mum passed away last October, we were very close but towards the end she was quite a naughty diabetic and we were constantly arguing about what she should and shouldn't eat. She went into a comma and passed away a couple of hours later. At the time of her death, I was standing right beside her bed and actually saw the heart monitors failing and then starting up again and then finally ending. It was quite a traumatic experience for me as I was the only one there at the time. My mum, and her female line is very connected to the spirit-ancestors so I grew up knowing that dreams and messages are all around us.

The incident:
Early this year, I was washing one Saturday when I heard my mum call my name. It was not a causal call but an insistent call like something was wrong. I looked around and then walked through the house knowing that she was trying to tell me something. When I was unable to determine what it might be I walked up to her picture and said "Mum I know you are trying to tell me something but I dont understand your message. Please come to me in a dream and tell me what it is." That night I dreamed that my mum was going Christmas shopping and even though I was aware that it was March it wasnt strange to me in that dream state. So we talked about the Christmas meal etc and when she asked that I go to town with her I said that I was having fun with my cousins ( I am not close to any of them so this was odd) and so she said she would go alone. After some time I noticed that my mum was lying on a bed but she was lying in a very awkward position and so I asked her why she hadnt yet gone to town. She said that she had wanted to go with me but as I decided not to go that she would rest for a while. S o I sat down beside her and asked her what she would want for Christmas as she was always saying that gifts should be practical and not decorative or impractical. She told me that she wanted a new mattress so I woke up happy knowing what I was going to get her.

The meaning:
The next day I woke up knowing that my mum had given me a message and so I wondered what it might be. Considering she was lying in an awkward position and the fact that she wanted a mattress pointed me to her grave which I had not visited for a couple of weeks because of very bad weather. When I got there I found that someone had burnt all the flowers on her grave and the bark cloth (traditional) covering we had put there. The top half of her grave was black with ash. I was so upset that I wept so hard knowing what her message was. Later that week I mentioned it to a friend who is Fijian and she told her mother who said that in their culture this was a sign of black magic and that someone with evil intentions had performed some ritual on the grave. So I put holy water and salt and some leaves as recommended by this friend and called in the Catholic Charismatic group which has two resident psychics (one of whom is only 8 yrs old!). The child could not come on the night of our prayer but the older psychic and her group came to our house.

On the ride to the house, she said that she could see that half of my mum's grave was black and that freaked me out as it was exactly as I had seen. As soon as she entered she said that my mum had not moved on and was still with us. We performed a spiritual reconciliation with mum to help her move into the light and when the psychic went into her trance told us that my mum was now our guardian angel or spirit guide. My mum actually spoke to me through her and even though the voice was not hers, the words certainly were. She was reminding me of my responsibilities and I knew she was there.

During the prayer session as we each said our good byes we felt a cold chill through the room as touched each of us. My sister, niece and I felt it in our hands as if she was clasping them and my twin daughter felt their feet (my mum always reached out and squeezed their feet as they lay on the floor playing video games or watching TV).

Since then, we always take salt and holy water with us when we go to the grave to protect us from whatever anyone may leave there for us (for my own sanity and protection of the kids) but in all of this, the best news was just knowing that mum was able to contact me and that she is now our spirit guide.

Another strange incident concerning mum:
In all my panic and haste at arranging the funeral, I forgot to burn or place her clothes that we removed from her body in her casket and had placed them in her wardrobe (meaning to put them in the casket). After some time, we noticed that the wardrobe door which is perfectly fine, kept swinging open and only when I opened the wardrobe did I see the plastic bag of her clothes and our hair that we had cut during the funeral did realize what it was. When I had disposed of it, (burning with holy water and salt) did the wardrobe door stop swinging open. Strange isn't it? My mum was a very spiritual woman and was always placing salt around our house as protection and I think she wanted me to get rid of these items as they could be stolen and used for evil purposes.

As a side note: In some pacific island countries, esp. the Melanesian & Micronesian ones, black magic is a way of life for some and is still practiced. For Polynesians, ancestor-guides are common but not black-magic. Christianity is widely practiced by some still ascribe to such rituals for symbolic sacrifices, taking the talents or success of living or dead persons for their own purposes.
